URUKÁ
MONTE AZUL
A new chapter with deep roots
2025
Uruká Monte Azul was born as an intimate yet visionary project, a seed planted with the hope of blossoming into something lasting. Although small in scale, it aspires to be a beacon of innovation among artist residency programs in Latin America, honoring two decades of learning, collaborations, and faith in the transformative power of art.
Gratitude and Community
Since I returned to Costa Rica in 2005—after a life abroad—the heart of Monte Azul has beat thanks to two forces: the generous stability of Costa Rica and the human fabric of artists, collectors, and allies who have sustained it.
To you—
who donated art, shared resources, opened doors, and kept faith in this dream even when the path was unclear:
thank you.
The past twenty years have shown me that beyond any measure of success, what truly lasts are the connections we nurture and the way we lift one another—not just as individuals, but as a community.
A Future with Purpose
In these turbulent times, I look forward to the future with humility and hope. I envision a Monte Azul that transcends those who founded it: independent spaces that share a community where creative freedom, mutual respect, and harmony with nature are pillars. A place that celebrates not only art, but also civil rights, local community, and authentic connection between people.
Uruká: A Deliberate Beginning
With Uruká Monte Azul, we're taking a small but conscious step toward that future. It's not an end, but a new beginning—an invitation to continue weaving this story together.

History of Monte Azul: art, nature and evolution
Foundation & Vision (2003)
Monte Azul was founded in 2003 as a holistic project, built on three pillars:
-

Boutique Hotel
-
Nature Reserve
Its philosophy centered on blending art, nature, community, and business—creating an inspiring space where art (understood as creation, innovation, and problem-solving) was the heartbeat of the project.
Golden Era: Phase 1 (2008–2015)
-
Resident Artists: Established creators were invited to produce works inspired by their stays, exhibited both on-site and in international venues (New York, San José, San Francisco).
-
Recognition: Pieces were acquired by guests and showcased at institutions like Art Basel, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Philadelphia Art Museum.
-
Awards & Features: Allergic, Art News Online, Su Casa, Condé Nast Traveller, Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine.
